Infrastructure
Ferrous Protection have the capability and expertise to deliver abrasive blasting and protective coating works to steel assets in some of the most environmentally sensitive and difficult access areas. These often include bridges, jetties, steel frames and various other structures, often requiring scaffolding, lead abatement, traffic management, waste management, encapsulation etc.
We carry out works for both public sector bodies and private sector companies to deliver a professional and quality service on time, on budget and most importantly - safely! We do this through employing the correct people, from ICorr L3 Paint Inspectors, to Working Supervisors and Sprayers that have worked for the business for over 25 years. We also engage with our supply chain of trusted and vetted subcontractors and suppliers to offer the customer a complete and comprehensive service including scaffolding & encapsulation, containment and disposal of hazardous waste, traffic management etc.
Experience & Service Offering
From blasting and spraying large suspension bridges in our early days such as Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, to mechanically preparing and coating jetties in Malta in recent years, we have extensive experience in undertaking technically and logistically complex works whilst maintaining the highest quality, safety and environmental standards. All works are completed in compliance with our externally awarded ISO9001 Quality System, ISO14001 Environmental System and ISO45001 Health & Safety System and come with a site- and task-specific risk assessment, method statement and inspection & test plan.
We are as comfortable with focusing on our role as a blasting & painting contractor as we are with project managing a multitude of disciplines including
- De-vegetation works
- UHP water jetting & abrasive blasting cleaning
- Salt cleaning
- Localised corrosion repair / mechanical surface preparation
- Deck blast tracking
- Fall arrest / restraint systems
- Scaffolding / Pontoon / Powered / Rope Access
- Encapsulation
- Lead abatement
- Safety boats / rescue arrangements
- Containment, disposal and recovery of hazardous waste
- Traffic management
- Site security & ring fencing
Case Study - Canal Bridge Blasting & Painting Project
Client: Construction Engineering Contractor
Location: UK
Contract Value: £35,000
Asset(s): New Build Canal Bridge
Project Brief: Ferrous Protection were recently engaged by a well known construction engineering company to provide corrosion protection to the abutments and wing walls to a new build bridge providing local access to a new housing estate over a canal.
The contract was meticulously planned by our experienced management team who worked closely with the customer to deliver the project in line with Series 5000 specification. Extensive planning and consideration was necessary given the environmental and safety risks present when working over a water course, adjacent to a busy road and on a building site with local residents.
We abrasive blasted the steel sheet piles using garnet, a naturally occurring, inert and non-hazardous blast media which gave the customer three benefits; 1. There was no risk of contaminating the local water course, 2. Garnet is semi-expendable and therefore does not break down into dust as quickly as other generic blast media such as copper slag so we were able to keep dust levels relatively low and minimise impact to site neighbours, 3. The spent garnet was used as a part material for backfilling the excavations round the sheet piles so reduced the amount of materials used on the contract.
Full design scaffold and shrink wrap encapsulation were installed round the workface and engineering controls such as dust extraction and dehumidification were implemented to achieve the necessary atmospheric conditions and safe working conditions.
We first pressure washed the substrate to remove surface contaminants such as soluble salts to within specified limits and then once dry we abrasive blast cleaned the steel substrate to a cleanliness standard compliant with ISO8501-1 Sa2.5.
Once the area had been cleaned, we applied by airless spray a low VOC epoxy system reinforced with chemically resistant high aspect ratio lamellar glass flake for enhanced durability, abrasion and corrosion protection with strong cathodic disbondment performance.
The project received weekly HSQE inspections from a senior manager and inspections by a ICorr L3 Protective Coating Inspector. The work was delivered successfully and safely.
Project Manager: "5 Stars for overall project management, quality of finished work and HSE performance. I am very happy with the works and would happily use Ferrous Protection again."
