Aviation fuel tank lining is a process of applying a specialised protective lining to the interior of bulk liquid storage tanks containing aviation fuel such as Avgas, jet fuel and Jet A-1.

This protective lining serves as a barrier between the fuel and the tank, preventing leaks, corrosion, deterioration of cargo quality and other issues that can compromise the safety and performance of the aircraft.

Benefits of Aviation Fuel Tank Lining

There are many benefits to aviation fuel tank lining, including:

  • Preventing fuel leaks: Fuel leaks are not only dangerous, but they can cause significant environmental contamination and safety issues. Not to mention, the cost of lost product, clean up, investigations, reputation damage, EA fines, repairing the hole and replacing the fuel…
  • Protecting against corrosion and rust: Over time, corrosion naturally occurs in aviation fuel tanks. As the steel deteriorates as a result of the corrosion, the integrity of the structure becomes compromised which can lead to devastating results.
  • Extending the life of your fuel system: Aviation fuel tank lining is a tried and tested means of extending the life of the asset by significantly reducing the corrosion rate of the ferrous surfaces inside the aviation fuel tank. By preventing corrosion from occurring inside the tank, significant cost savings can be made by avoiding mechanical repairs to the steel.
  • Improving fuel quality and performance: Fuel quality is extremely important in the aviation sector which is why tanks are commonly lined. An effective lining inside the tank will prevent rust contaminating the aviation fuel.

The Aviation Fuel Tank Lining Process

At Ferrous Protection we use a proven process to ensure that your fuel tanks are properly lined and protected:

  1. Inspection and evaluation: We will inspect your fuel tanks using fully trained ICorr and NACE certified Protective Coating Inspectors to determine the condition of the tank and assess what type of lining system would be most appropriate to achieve the performance and/or durability required by the asset owner.
  2. Preparation: We will clean and prepare the interior of the fuel tanks to remove any existing rust/contamination to ensure that the lining will adhere properly.
  3. Lining application: We will apply a specialised coating to the interior of the tanks, ensuring that all surfaces are properly covered.
  4. Curing and inspection: We will cure the coating under environmental controls and then perform various inspections on the applied lining to check that a uniform, tightly adhered and defect free system has been applied to specification.
  5. QAQC: A fully comprehensive quality handover pack will be presented back to the customer on completion of the project providing all relevant information including any agreed warranties or guarantees.

TANK LINING CASE STUDY

Customer: Air BP

Location: Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Date: June 2022 – Sep 2022

Brief: Fuel infrastructure upgrade to Greenland’s largest commercial & military air transport hub.

Value: $1.4m

Air BP, who are the global leader in the aviation sector has recently benefited from this relationship. In 2021, we were successful in tendering for the major fuel infrastructure upgrade of Kangerlussuaq Airport, Greenland’s largest commercial airport and hub for domestic and foreign military activity. The project includes pipeline repair, and application of AkzoNobel’s protective three-coat epoxy system from its International® brand, to 1.46km of cross-country pipeline and the refurbishment and re-lining of six 100m3 bullet tanks and a cone down vertical storage tank with Interline® 984 novolac epoxy phenolic.

The application of the new Interline 984 novolac epoxy phenolic tank lining system offers the tanks another 12-15 years life to first maintenance and is critical in allowing Greenland’s main air transport hub to continue operating.

WHAT AIR BP SAYS:

“The Ferrous Protection and Qualitech partnership has shown the power of collaboration, it has combined the safety performance and know-how of tank cleaning from Qualitech along with the expertise and knowledge of tank and pipework corrosion protection from Ferrous Protection. In addition, Ferrous Protection’s attention to detail and diligent planning has led to the project in Kangerlussuaq being executed to perfection, which is a rare achievement in the project environment.
