Performance coatings are a type of coating that is designed to protect and enhance surfaces e.g. steel, concrete etc in a variety of environments. They are typically made from high-quality materials and resins, and they are formulated with a range of properties in mind such as:

  • Protecting steel from corrosion or chemical attack.
  • Protecting tank cargos from rust product.
  • Protecting steel from extreme temperatures and fire.
  • Extending the life of the asset.

Performance coatings are used in a wide range of industries, including:

  • Aerospace / Aviation / Airports
  • Petrochemical / Chemical processing
  • Marine
  • Rail
  • Construction / Infrastructure
  • Off shore
  • Oil and gas
  • Power generation / Energy
  • Manufacturing
  • Food and beverage processing
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Medical devices
  • Automotive

There are many different types of performance coatings available, each with its own unique properties and benefits. Some of the most common types of performance coatings include:

  • Epoxy coatings: Epoxy coatings are known for their durability, chemical resistance, and abrasion resistance. They are often used in industrial and commercial applications such as tank linings, protective coatings, factory floors (including anti-skid), fire protection etc. They can be pigmented with anodic metals such as zinc and aluminium to provide further cathodic protection to the steel asset, as well lamellar aluminium flake and micaceous iron oxide to enhance their impermeability and resistance to atmospheric contaminants, moisture and electrolytes.
  • Vinyl Ester coatings: Vinyl ester tank linings are often used to protect steel tanks and vessels from aggressive cargos such as sulphuric acid, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid etc. They can be reinforced with glass flake to improve durability and impact resistance.
  • Polyurethane coatings: Polyurethane coatings are also very durable and often used to protect epoxy undercoats from UV radiation and to provide a pleasing aesthetic finish to industrial painting projects. They are often used in applications where flexibility and impact resistance are required, such as in pipelines, tank roofs, bridges etc.
  • Acrylic coatings: Acrylic coatings are fast-drying and offer good UV protection. They are often used in applications where appearance is important, such as on tank externals, bridges etc.
  • Methyl Methacrylates (MMA): Methyl methacrylates are known for being extremely effective, heavy duty bund lining systems. They are flexible, offer excellent resistance to atmospheric contaminants and are exceptional at ensuring containment bunds are fully sealed and protected.

What Are Performance Coatings Used For?

Performance coatings can be used on a variety of surfaces, including metal, concrete, wood, plastic, and glass. They are used to protect surfaces from corrosion, abrasion, chemicals, and other environmental hazards. Performance coatings can also be used to improve the appearance of surfaces and to make them easier to clean.

PERFORMANCE COATING CASE STUDY

Ferrous Protection Helps Oil and Gas Company Reduce Corrosion Costs

We were recently contacted by a leading bulk liquid storage company in the UK who were facing problems with product quality by rust contamination and iron “pick-up” affecting the stored cargo. The tank was a 30m dia rivetted above ground storage tank with a coned roof.

Ferrous Protection attended site to perform an initial survey of the tank and discuss the client’s problem in detail. Once all fact finding was complete and a thorough understanding of the requirement was obtained, a technical proposal was compiled with a detailed quotation for the works.

The scope included

  • Provision of confined space safety standby and emergency rescue arrangements.
  • Access at height using robust mobile towers specifically designed for use in storage tanks.
  • Removal of the failed existing lining by abrasive blast-cleaning using a non-metallic, expendable abrasive.
  • Dressing of all steel defects, scrape coat application to areas of heavy pitting, filling of gaps and joints using flexible epoxy mastic.
  • Application of a solvent free, novolac epoxy phenolic tank lining system by airless spray to the floor and 10m up the shell (just above the fill line).
  • Curing under climatic controls including heating and dehumidification to ensure the lining was cured under the correct conditions.
  • Full inspection of the newly applied lining including d.f.t. checks, holiday detection and visual inspection. 6no small snags were identified, marked up, repaired and re-tested to ensure the tank was returned in specification and fit for purpose.

  • The client’s need for the tank to be returned to service quickly was recognised and the programme was planned out in detail to ensure maximum efficiency and the team worked 7 days per week to minimise downtime for the customer.

The client commended the Ferrous Protection team for delivering the project to specification and safely.
